How To: Managing Your Kindle Security

While Amazon’s Kindle is a great product, it has very little security. Below are tips that you can use to make sure you password protect your Kindle, and don’t receive unwanted documents or charges to your Kindle account.

Password Protecting Your Kindle

You can set a password for your Kindle so no unauthorized users can access it.

To set a password:

  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu button.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings.
  3. Go to Device Password at the bottom of the list.
  4. Scroll down until the words “turn on” are highlighted and select it. A Set Password window appears.
  5. Enter the password you want to use, and type it again to confirm it.
  6. Enter a password hint.
  7. Click Submit.

Setting the Maximum Personal Document Charge

You can set the maximum charge allowed for a single personal document sent to your Kindle. Any personal document that exceeds this charge will be sent to your Kindle email address and a notification will be sent to your Kindle. We recommend setting the maximum personal document charge to $0 so you never incur unwanted charges.

To set your maximum personal document charge:

  1. Login to your Amazon Kindle account and click Personal Document Settings in the left navigation panel.
  2. In the Maximum Personal Document Charge section, click Change.
  3. Set the maximum charge amount.
  4. Click Update limit.

Setting the Approved Personal Document Email List

Email attachments from users you don’t know many contain viruses or other kinds of malware. You can use the Approved Personal Document Email List to make sure you only receive email attachments from those email accounts you authorize.

To set your approved personal document email list:

  1. Login to your Amazon Kindle account and click Personal Document Settings in the left navigation panel.
  2. In the Approved Personal Document Email List section, click Add a new approved email address.
  3. Enter an email address, and then click Add Address.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 as needed.

Wait a few seconds while your computer connects. If you have never connected to your private home WiFi network on the Xfinity Wireless Gateway, you will need to enter the Network Key that is printed on the label affixed to the bottom of the Wireless Gateway and click Next. If you have changed the network key from the original setting, enter that key instead. You can find out more about connecting to your Wireless Gateway here.
