When Everyone Knows Your Name, Email, and Social Security Number

The New York Times shares details from a staggering new report that confirms just how little privacy many of us have online. The report cites major privacy leaks on 185 top websites, often making it incredibly simple to track our online activities with our real name and email address.

In an example cited in the article, a researcher snapped photos of total strangers, then used facial recognition technology to “re-identify” them. He was accurate in 33% of the photos, all by using publicly available Facebook photos, and he was also able to find the correct Social Security numbers for 25% of the strangers.
