Funnywoman Melissa McCarthy, hilarious Jason Bateman, and a movie focused on raising awareness of identity theft? Bring on the popcorn!
The Identity Thief comedy, which premieres February 8, is about a man in Colorado (Bateman) who gets his identity stolen by a woman (McCarthy) living in Florida. Fearing a dangerously low credit score, he hits the road in an attempt to foil the identity thief who is living the high life all the way across the country after stealing his name — Sandy Bigelow Patterson — to get credit cards, purchase high-priced items, and generally wreak havoc on his life.
Sound familiar? This is what happens to approximately 15 million Americans each year. Annual financial losses total upwards of $50 billion. On a case-by-case basis, these losses cost about $3,500 per victim.
According to PC World, one in three people on social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter have at least three pieces of sensitive personal information available (full name, birthday, mother’s maiden name, phone number) that, when pieced together with other information found online, makes stealing someone’s identity relatively simple.
