ID Theft: Easier Than Robbing a Bank?

The South Florida Sun Sentinel obtained FTC data on identity theft complaints by ZIP codes in Florida. It found a spike in one type of theft in particular — using another person’s Social Security number to file for a fraudulent income tax refund from the IRS. As this article points out, one identity thief — a career criminal — told detectives “it’s easier to steal someone’s identity than to rob a bank.”
